Writing a Great LinkedIn Experience Summary - Greg Hyer's Social Selling Tip of the Day

Audio Transcript:

Here’s your social selling tip of the day for March 1, 2020. I’m Greg Hyer of Linking into Sales.

Today, let’s focus on a specific location within you LinkedIn profile: The Experience Section.

This section usually includes every position and organization you’ve worked for. Most LinkedIn users will complete this section like it was a resume or leave it entirely blank. If you do that, get ready to take some notes because you’re going to need an overhaul.

In our LinkedIn Profile Fundamentals course on SocialSelling.Training we teach our social selling students how to set up a customer facing profile that is optimized for discovery. The Experience section is one large keyword zone within your profile. LinkedIn will use this section to help display your profile in the search results based on a user’s search. So, how do you write about your experience so it’s optimized for LinkedIn search?

We recommend writing two brief paragraphs. The first paragraph should be two to three sentences that describe the company you work for and what they offer. The second paragraph should describe how you have helped your customers become successful. This is critical in creating a customer facing LinkedIn profile. Remember that it’s all about the buyer’s journey not the sales cycle. You should never share that you kill your quota every month unless you’re looking for a job.

Use the same keywords that your Marketing team is using to help get the company website found in Google. Remember to write for a human, not for the machine. It’s obvious when people stuff their profile with keywords to trick LinkedIn and manipulate the search results. It makes for a bad first impression. Don’t do it.

That does it for this social selling tip of the day. In addition to this daily tip, check out the Social Selling Podcast by Linking into Sales on iTunes, Google Play Music, Stitcher, YouTube and Tunein. You can even ask Alexa to play the Social Selling Podcast by Linking into Sales.
