Personalize Your LinkedIn Invites - Social Selling Tip of the Day 029

Audio Transcript:

Here’s your social selling tip of the day for May 18, 2020. I’m Greg Hyer of Linking into Sales.

Personalize the invites you send to connect with other on LinkedIn. No matter if you’re using the desktop or mobile version of LinkedIn, you should personalize that first message.

The generic message that LinkedIn prepopulated in your invites is there as a suggestion. If you change that message to something personalized that new connection will remember you and feel obligated to reply.

Can’t think of what to write? Maybe you have the urge to pitch what you do and puke all over that connection you’re trying to make. Set the pitch aside and connect with the individual. This is your first chance to build a relationship that is fruitful throughout your sales career. Seriously, did you think that person was going work at that company forever? Nope. They will change jobs and depending on how well you developed that relationship you may be able to sell to them again. Wouldn’t that be nice?

Some of you may be thinking that you can’t personalize an invite on LinkedIn’s mobile app. I’m going to tell you how because you are not an average LinkedIn user. Open LinkedIn on your mobile device and go to a profile of someone you’re not connected with. You should see two big buttons in the middle of your screen. They say “Inmail” and “Connect.” From this point forward you will not press either of these two buttons. Look in the upper right corner and you will see three vertical dots. Tap the three dots and a new menu will appear. The second option should be “Personalize Invite.” Yes. It’s right there. From this point forward you have no excuse to personalize an invite to connect on LinkedIn.

If you’re having trouble finding it, just tweet me on Twitter @GregHyer and I’ll help you out.
